The Morgantown Project

“Somewhere along the Potomac River there is a place called Morgantown. You wouldn't stop there unless you had to. By boat it looks like any other rusted river community. Beaten and unremarkable. This is the place that made me. The mud shaped my heart. The salt burned my soul. And the water taught me how to live.”

Background

Launched in Spring 2022, the Morgantown Project is a flash fiction series inspired by a small river community called Morgantown located in Southern Maryland. This space is where Soda spent much of his youth and he now finds himself drawn to revisiting that time in his life and most importantly representing this special community of river people.  Every few months, a collection of flash fiction pieces were mailed to readers across the United States and Canada which allowed them to be part of the creative development as Soda worked on this finalized work.

Notebook 1

Notebook 1 is the first chapbook in this series of experimental flash fiction. It is structured as Soda’s own notebook as he journeys back to Morgantown after the death of a family member. It contains artifacts, observations and drafts of stories that allow the reader to draw their own conclusions of the trials and tribulations that are presented. The characters are loosely based on real people and what lies within are equal parts truth, gossip and absolute riverbilly fantasy.

All sales of Notebook 1 will be donated to
Cape Fear River Watch (CFRW) located in Wilmington, North Carolina. CFRW seeks to protect and improve the water quality of the Cape Fear River Basin for all people through education, advocacy and action.
